Madhya Pradesh to Hold Student Union Elections After Nine-Year Gap

Student union elections in Madhya Pradesh universities and colleges are set to be held in September 2026, marking the first such polls in nine years. The State Government confirmed this development to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday, August 3, while presenting the academic calendar for the 2026–27 session. The announcement comes after years of legal petitions demanding the restoration of student body elections.

Court Pushes for Democratic Representation

The High Court was hearing two petitions filed in 2024 and 2025, which argued that the absence of student union elections since 2017 had undermined democratic representation in educational institutions. Acting on these pleas, a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Pradeep Mittal directed the State Government and public universities to ensure that elections are held in every college. The court also emphasized the need for adequate security arrangements during the polls, urging colleges and universities to coordinate with district administrations and local police.

Government Response Under Review

State Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar stated that his department is reviewing the court's directives and has already discussed the matter with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. “We will take a decision soon,” Parmar said, speaking to reporters in Bhopal. He added that the government is committed to implementing the court's instructions.
