Ladakh's apricots make international debut with UAE shipment

In a significant milestone for Ladakh's horticulture sector, the first consignment of five metric tonnes of organic apricots was flagged off to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on July 15, 2026. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the development, marking the region's entry into international fruit markets. This initiative is part of an ambitious plan to scale up apricot exports to over 1,000 metric tonnes this season, a dramatic increase from the mere 1.5 tonnes exported in the past two years.

A Boost for Local Farmers and the Economy

The export initiative is backed by a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lulu Group, a major player in global retail. According to Mr. Saxena, this partnership will provide Ladakhi farmers with direct access to international markets, creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening the local economy. “This giant stride would go a long way in establishing Ladakh as a premier export hub,” he said.

Ladakh, known for its unique varieties of apricots such as Khante, Ngarmo, Raktsey Karpo, and Halman, produces 15,789 tonnes annually across regions like the Sham belt, Nubra Valley, and Kargil. However, the region has faced challenges, including high wastage rates of 40-50% due to a lack of global supply chains.

Competitive Edge and Challenges

Ladakh’s apricots have a natural advantage in the global market due to their later harvest season, which does not overlap with the main apricot season elsewhere. However, the region’s limited connectivity and the fruit’s short shelf life have historically restricted its market potential. These challenges have pushed local farmers to focus on producing sun-dried apricots, a staple in Ladakhi and Kashmiri culture.

Calls for Recognition and Investment

Despite the progress, local leaders have voiced concerns about the lack of recognition and support for Kargil, which produces the majority of Ladakh’s apricots, 10,656 metric tonnes annually. Sajjad Kargilli, a local leader, criticized the Union Territory Administration for not securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Helman Apricot and for establishing the Centre of Excellence for apricot cultivation in Leh instead of Kargil. He also highlighted the absence of a dedicated research center for apricot and apple cultivation in Kargil, despite its significant contribution to horticulture.
