Canal Restoration in Kochi to Be Fast-Tracked to Tackle Waterlogging

Efforts to curb waterlogging in Kochi are set to intensify, with authorities expediting the restoration of key canals across the city. Work on the Mullassery Canal, a critical project in this initiative, will resume on September 1 and is slated for completion by March next year. These decisions were finalized during a review meeting of the city’s ‘Operation Breakthrough’ initiative, chaired by District Collector G. Priyanka.

Key Measures to Address Waterlogging

The review meeting outlined several immediate actions to mitigate waterlogging, including the completion of cleaning work at the mouth of the T.P. Canal and measures taken by the Public Works Department (PWD) to resolve drainage issues in the High Court area. Additionally, the Kochi Corporation Secretary has been instructed to ramp up inspections to identify and penalize sources of banned single-use plastic, which often clogs drainage systems.

Urgent steps have also been ordered to clean the drains in the KSRTC bus stand area, where illegal waste dumping has been reported. Authorities plan to relocate shops operating above these drains to facilitate proper maintenance. Furthermore, a directive was issued to ensure that silt and sludge removed during cleaning operations are promptly transported to designated silt yards, preventing accumulation along roadsides.

Progress on Key Projects

The meeting highlighted progress on several critical projects. The tendering process for addressing waterlogging at Jose Junction and jetting work on T.D. Road has been completed. Additionally, the National Highways Authority of India confirmed the completion of box culvert work near Edappally Oberon Mall. However, delays in the tendering process for a similar project at Kammatippadam have prompted authorities to seek an urgent report from the Railway Department.

Kochi has been grappling with severe waterlogging during the monsoon season, disrupting daily life and causing significant inconvenience to residents. The expedited restoration of canals and other drainage infrastructure is expected to provide much-needed relief. By addressing waste management, illegal dumping, and plastic pollution, the city aims to tackle the root causes of its drainage woes, ensuring long-term solutions.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of incorporating new contractual conditions to maintain cleanliness and improve waste management practices in future projects. These measures reflect a comprehensive approach to making Kochi more resilient to waterlogging challenges.
