Karnataka launches citizen-led food safety teams to ensure hygiene standards

In a significant move to enhance food safety, Karnataka's Health Minister U.T. Khader announced the formation of citizen-led food safety watch teams at the taluk level across the state. Speaking at the launch of the “Eat Right” campaign on Monday, the Minister said these teams would include senior citizens, former food safety officials, and experienced chefs, who will be issued ID cards to inspect food establishments and report violations.

Citizen Oversight to Strengthen Food Safety

The initiative aims to empower citizens to act as "force multipliers" in ensuring hygienic food practices. “Every citizen has the right to eat clean food. Accordingly, all stakeholders must work towards providing clean and hygienic food,” Mr. Khader stated. He emphasized the importance of consumer awareness about food quality, particularly in hotels.

Guidelines for the operation of these watch teams will be framed and issued shortly. Violations reported by the teams will be forwarded to the head office for action.

Crackdown on PGs and Hostels

The Minister also highlighted ongoing inspections by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in hotels, hostels, dhabas, and anganwadis. He announced plans to extend these checks to paying guest accommodations, citing concerns over unhygienic food being served to students and working women. “When unhygienic food is served to them, they fall sick and are forced to go back to their homes,” he said.

A 10-day deadline has been given to PGs and other food providers to rectify any violations. After this period, penalties will be imposed for non-compliance. Inspections will also cover private college hostels, catering centres, and food outlets in railway stations, airports, and airplanes, with samples sent for lab analysis.

Collaborative Approach with Industry

The Health Department plans to engage with star hotel owners in an upcoming meeting to discuss food safety measures. “These hotel owners are not our enemies. They have contributed to the economy of the state and country. During the meeting, they can give us suggestions, and we will examine whether to include them or not,” Mr. Khader said.

Food Safety Conclave and Digital Reporting

To further strengthen food safety measures, the Health Department will organise a food safety conclave involving Union government officials and representatives from other states. The conclave will focus on standards for consuming meat and imported chocolates, among other issues.

Additionally, the state has introduced a QR code-based complaint management system, allowing citizens to report food and drug safety violations. A toll-free number and dedicated call centre are also in the pipeline to streamline public grievances.

This multi-pronged approach underscores Karnataka’s commitment to ensuring food safety and public health.
