Karnataka forms SIT to probe fraudulent insurance claims as per S

An order issued by the Karnataka Home Department on September 22, 2026, creates a Special Investigation Team to register and carry out speedy investigations into fraudulent claims received by insurance companies.

The order follows directions of the Supreme Court in SLP (Civil), which called for State-level special investigation teams to handle fraudulent insurance claims.

Statewide police station status

The SIT has jurisdiction across Karnataka and has been declared a police station under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

The team will be headed by an Inspector General of Police as its chairperson.

A Superintendent of Police nominated by the CID will be a member of the SIT.

The team will also include a Deputy Superintendent of Police nominated by the Director General and Inspector General of Police, and three police inspectors nominated by the DG&IGP.

This structure gives the SIT a dedicated police framework for registering and investigating complaints linked to fraudulent insurance claims across the State.

Complaints to be routed through DG&IGP

All complaints received from insurance companies regarding fraudulent claims will be transferred by the DG&IGP to the SIT for investigation.

The DG&IGP will also provide the required officers and staff to the team as and when necessary.

The SIT’s investigating officers have been authorised to submit final reports before the jurisdictional courts under Section 193 of the BNSS.

The team will function under the supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Police Headquarters, Bengaluru.

The government order directs the SIT to thoroughly investigate all such complaints and submit investigation reports to the government without delay through the DG&IGP.

The SIT will periodically report the progress of investigations to the DG&IGP through the ADGP (Law and Order).

The arrangement places insurance-company complaints, investigation, court reporting and progress monitoring within a single State-level mechanism created in line with the Supreme Court’s directions.
