A.N. Nagaraj, a plant scientist who dedicated more than four decades to practising and promoting organic farming across Karnataka, died at a private hospital in Shivamogga after a brief illness. He was 97 and is survived by three children.
Career spanning continents
Dr. Nagaraj, son of prominent Kannada writer and thinker A.N. Murthyrao, travelled abroad for higher studies in biology and earned his doctorate in the United States. He worked as a scientist in the U.S. before joining the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the Philippines, where he served for several years.
After returning to India, Dr. Nagaraj committed himself to organic farming, practising and advocating the method across the state for over 40 years. In his later years, he made Bheemanakatte near Tirthahalli his home.
Literary legacy
His autobiography, Anandada Hudukatadalli (In Search of Happiness), was published in 2023 when he was 95. The work captured his life's journey and philosophy.
