Japan's Ruling Party Launches Task Force for $2.1 Billion Trading Card Market
Japan's ruling party MPs launch a task force to safeguard the $2.1 billion trading card market from counterfeits and fraud.
A group of lawmakers from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has launched an initiative to address growing concerns in the nation’s booming $2.1 billion trading card market. The group, comprising around 20 MPs, aims to combat issues such as counterfeit cards, fraudulent sales, and the misuse of trading cards for money laundering.
Protecting a Thriving Industry
The trading card market in Japan has seen remarkable growth, expanding from ¥88 billion in 2017 to ¥338 billion (approximately $2.1 billion) in the 2025 financial year, according to the Japan Toy Association. This surge in popularity, fueled by iconic franchises like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, has also drawn international attention, with fans and collectors worldwide driving demand.
However, this growth has brought challenges. The MPs’ group is pushing for the establishment of rules to tackle counterfeit cards and prevent bulk purchases aimed at reselling for profit. They also seek to enhance market transparency, which they believe is critical for supporting the industry’s global expansion.
A Global Opportunity
At the group’s inaugural meeting in late July, Seiji Kihara, a member of the House of Representatives and the group’s chairman, highlighted the trading card industry’s potential to compete on a global scale. Kihara, whose son is an avid collector, emphasized the importance of fostering a "healthy market" to sustain the sector’s growth.
The meeting, held in Japan’s parliament, included briefings from industry representatives and officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. They outlined the current state of the market and the challenges it faces, underscoring the need for regulatory measures.
Regional and Cultural Significance
Beyond its economic impact, the trading card industry plays a vital role in Japan’s cultural and regional development. Tournaments and events are held across the country, drawing participants and fans while boosting local economies. Lawmakers see the industry as not only a financial asset but also a cultural export that enhances Japan’s global soft power.
Why It Matters
The formation of this parliamentary group signals a proactive approach to safeguarding a lucrative and culturally significant industry. By addressing fraud, counterfeiting, and market transparency, the initiative aims to ensure sustainable growth while positioning Japan as a leader in the global trading card market.
