Inter Miami Face D.C. United After Five-Game Winless MLS Run
Inter Miami face D.C. United after five MLS matches without a win, while Lionel Messi continues to produce goals and assists.
Inter Miami enter their meeting with D.C. United in third place in the Eastern Conference, but their recent MLS form has created pressure for a response from Lionel Messi and his teammates.
Miami have failed to win their last five MLS matches, drawing four in a row before losing 2-1 to the Colombus Crew on September 27.
D.C. United arrive in 11th place in the East, two places and three points outside the playoff picture, after drawing 3-3 with the Vancouver Whitecaps in their previous match.
The match is scheduled for Saturday at Nu Stadium, where D.C. head coach Rene Weiler expects Miami to react after their poor run of results.
Miami remain third despite winless run
Inter Miami’s position in the standings remains significantly stronger than D.C. United’s, but the gap has not removed the importance of the fixture for either side.
Miami sit third in the Eastern Conference after a sequence in which they have been unable to turn Lionel Messi’s individual production into victories.
The team’s four consecutive draws were followed by the 2-1 defeat against the Colombus Crew, extending a winless league sequence that has become unusual in Messi’s career.
The defeat also damaged Miami’s hopes of reclaiming the Supporters’ Shield, with the team 14 points behind Nashville SC and only seven regular-season games remaining.
The recent run has been particularly striking because Messi has continued to contribute directly to goals.
He has been directly involved in at least one goal in 10 consecutive matches in all competitions for Miami, recording 10 goals and five assists during that sequence.
The run began with his final appearance for Argentina, in which he also scored.
It is the eighth time in Messi’s career that he has recorded a goal contribution in 10 or more consecutive club matches.
It is also the second time he has achieved that for Miami, following an 11-match run from February to May 2024.
Despite his contribution in each of Miami’s last five MLS matches, the team have failed to win any of them.
That is the first time in Messi’s career that a team has gone five league matches without a win while he appeared in every match, across 655 career games in LaLiga, Ligue 1 and MLS.
D.C. United are close to the playoff places
D.C. United’s 11th-place position leaves them outside the playoff picture, but the gap in the Eastern Conference remains narrow.
They are only two places and three points below the playoff line according to the standings before the match.
Every team between seventh and 13th in the East is separated by just five points, keeping D.C. involved in a congested playoff battle.
That context gives the match importance beyond Miami’s attempt to end its winless run.
D.C. have gone three games without a win, drawing two and losing one, since their 2-1 victory over the Colombus Crew in early September.
Their most recent result was the 3-3 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The club’s recent record has not matched its need to climb the standings, but the small points gap means that a change in results could alter its position in the playoff contest.
D.C. have won only two of their last 15 regular-season matches, drawing nine and losing four since a 2-0 victory over New York City in early May.
Their 11 wins since the start of last season are the fewest in MLS during that period.
That record is one reason Miami are described as overwhelming favourites despite their own five-match winless sequence.
Weiler expects a reaction
Weiler said Miami remained a strong team and suggested that the defeat to Columbus could make the assignment more difficult for D.C. United.
“First, Miami are a good team. And they lost their last game against Columbus, which makes the task a little more complicated than it already was,” Weiler told reporters.
He said Miami’s recent results meant they had to respond against D.C.
“They haven't had the best results lately, so they have to show a reaction. There's no option for them other than to win against us,” Weiler said.
His assessment reflects the pressure created by Miami’s standing and recent results.
Although Miami remain third in the East, their Supporters’ Shield hopes have almost disappeared after falling 14 points behind Nashville SC with seven regular-season games to play.
For D.C., the immediate objective is different: they are trying to remain within reach of the playoff positions while operating in a tightly packed part of the conference table.
Weiler described the contest as difficult but also as a match involving quality players.
“So, it will be a tough game, a great game featuring good players,” he said.
He also said the weather conditions would be the same for both teams.
“The weather conditions and all the rest will be the same for both teams,” Weiler said.
He added that D.C. would need strong performances across the squad.
“We hope we can play a good game, and of course, we need the best performances from all our players, otherwise it will be more than just difficult,” he said.
Messi’s numbers contrast with Miami’s results
Messi’s goal involvement is one of the clearest contrasts in the fixture.
While Miami have not won in their last five MLS matches, Messi has contributed to a goal in each of those games.
Since the beginning of the 2025 season, he has been involved in 19 more regular-season goals than D.C. United despite playing in eight fewer matches.
Messi has played 52 matches in that comparison and has recorded 50 goals and 33 assists, while D.C. have scored 64 goals in 60 matches.
The comparison also underlines D.C.’s difficulty in front of goal.
Since the beginning of the 2025 season, D.C. have scored only 64 goals in 60 matches, fewer than any other MLS team.
Messi alone has been involved in 83 regular-season goals during the period, compared with D.C. United’s 50 goals and 33 assists in the same comparison.
Baribo has been D.C.’s main goal threat this year, scoring 14 times.
That total is eight more than the team’s next-most prolific player, Louis Munteanu, who has scored six.
The numbers place added attention on whether D.C. can produce enough attacking output against a Miami side whose main player has continued to register goals and assists even during the winless run. [S13-S15]
Head-to-head record favours Miami
The recent head-to-head record gives Inter Miami another advantage before the match.
The Herons have won four of their last five meetings with D.C. United and drawn the other one.
They have also won the last two meetings in a row.
That represents a clear change from the opening phase of the rivalry, when Miami won only one of the teams’ first seven encounters, alongside two draws and four defeats.
Miami’s record is even stronger when Messi has played.
The Herons have won all three matches against D.C. United in which Messi appeared.
One of those victories was a 2-1 win in Baltimore on March 7.
The recent record explains why D.C. face a difficult challenge even though Miami have not won any of their last five league matches.
D.C. have only two wins in their last 15 regular-season matches, while Miami have the stronger head-to-head record and remain third in the conference.
Squad management adds to D.C.’s challenge
Weiler said D.C. had been working to improve as a team, with particular attention to the development of younger players.
“We want to try to become better daily. That is the main reason we have the training sessions, and we spoke about the young players: there are different skills they have to improve,” he said.
He said the team would then try to improve collectively.
“Then, we'll try to become better as a team,” Weiler added.
However, D.C. have had players away from the team during the previous two weeks.
Weiler also said the club would have to manage the workload because the squad is tight and the team has many matches in a row.
“But we had some players away from the team in the last two weeks. We'll also have to manage the workload because our squad is tight and we have a lot of games in a row,” he said.
That issue comes as D.C. try to end a three-game winless run and stay connected to the playoff positions.
Miami, meanwhile, will be attempting to convert Messi’s sustained goal involvement into a victory for the first time in five MLS matches.
The standings give Miami the higher position, while D.C.’s narrow distance from the playoff places keeps their own objective alive.
The meeting therefore brings together a third-placed Miami team under pressure to respond and an 11th-placed D.C. side trying to make a congested Eastern Conference race work in its favour.
