Inter Miami Holds Commanding Lead Over Atlanta United in Eastern Conference Showdown

Inter Miami CF sits comfortably in second place in the Eastern Conference with 42 points from 12 wins, four losses, and six draws, while Atlanta United languishes in 13th position with just 21 points from six wins, 13 losses, and three draws ahead of their Saturday night clash. Miami's offensive firepower was on full display last Saturday in a historic 7-1 demolition of CF Montréal, marking the largest margin of victory in club history. Messi bagged four goals and provided an assist, while Casemiro scored his first goal for Inter Miami and Academy product Alexander Shaw netted his maiden First Team strike. Four of those goals came after the 80th minute, demonstrating the team's ability to punish opponents late in matches.

Martino Returns to Face Former Team

Atlanta United coach Tata Martino brings intimate knowledge of Miami's strengths to Saturday's 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Nu Stadium. The Argentine from Messi's hometown of Rosario led Inter Miami to the 2024 Supporters' Shield with the best regular-season record in MLS history before resigning unexpectedly in November 2024 citing "personal reasons". He was hired a year later by Atlanta, the club with whom he won the 2018 MLS Cup.

Preparing his players for the challenge, Martino warned that no team can neutralize Messi for an entire match. "Even if we control the match for 89 minutes, we can still lose," he told his squad.

Atlanta winger Fafa Picault, who played for Inter Miami's title-winning team last season, echoed those concerns. "You can be ahead by two goals in the 80th minute, they punish you with three goals, and you go home with no points," said Picault, who scored game-winning goals in two of Atlanta's past three matches. Atlanta midfielder Alexei Miranchuk added: "It is very difficult to play Miami, but not impossible. We can dictate the majority of the game, but if we lose focus or get tired, they can hurt us".

Inter Miami closed its summer transfer window with deals for Brazilian forward Riquelme Fillipi from Palmeiras and Paraguayan midfielder Matías Galarza on loan from River Plate.
