Indian Youth Congress demands 50 lakh government job vacancies filled within one year

The Indian Youth Congress has given the Narendra Modi government twelve months to fill what it claims are over 50 lakh sanctioned but vacant posts across central and state departments, launching a year-long nationwide mobilisation that began on the Prime Minister's 76th birthday.

The opposition youth wing announced it would stage a protest outside the Prime Minister's residence if the deadline passes without action.

Campaign targets recruitment delays

The "Meri Degree Ka Kya" (What about my degree) drive, unveiled in Delhi, will push for a time-bound recruitment calendar that fixes examination and appointment deadlines for every vacant position.

Delhi Youth Congress president Akshay Lakra said the organisation would conduct "job marches" and "degree marches" across India over the coming year.

50 lakh vacancies cited

Lakra put the figure of unfilled sanctioned government posts at 50,05,850, arguing that recruitment would simultaneously create employment opportunities for young Indians and shore up delivery of public services including education and healthcare.

The Youth Congress used the occasion of Modi's birthday to attack the government, saying educated youth were compelled to struggle for jobs despite families investing years and resources in their education.

The organisation also recalled Modi's earlier commitment to generate two crore jobs every year.

Ultimatum and next steps

Should the government fail to fill the vacancies within the one-year window, Lakra said the Youth Congress would demonstrate outside the Prime Minister's residence on his next birthday.

IYC national secretary Parminder Singh Pummy attended the press conference announcing the campaign.

The initiative marks the latest attempt by the Congress to mobilise youth discontent over employment, framing unfilled government positions as both a missed opportunity for job-seekers and a deficit in state capacity.
