Hyderabad’s Uppal Stadium Turns Blue as International Cricket Returns After Two Years
Thousands of fans filled Hyderabad's Uppal stadium as India faced the West Indies, marking the city's return to international cricket after two years.
Thousands of fans filled the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal on Wednesday to watch India take on the West Indies, marking the return of international cricket to Hyderabad after a gap of two years.
The turnout gave the venue a markedly different appearance from Indian Premier League matches featuring Sunrisers Hyderabad, when the stadium is associated with a sea of orange. On this occasion, spectators arrived in Indian team jerseys, carried flags and cheered for the home side.
Fans gather as the match draws crowds
As the sun began to set, crowds gathered outside the stadium, with many spectators arriving by public transport and getting off near the venue. Vehicular movement continued around the stadium despite traffic restrictions as fans made their way towards the entry gates.
The match also attracted people who were still trying to secure tickets. At several gates, spectators asked for additional tickets for friends and family members after managing to purchase only a limited number online.
Supreeth said he had missed the first phase of online ticket sales because he was not aware of it. “During the second phase, I tried to buy the ₹900 tickets but could get only two, while I needed four. So, I am trying my luck here,” he said.
He was among those looking for additional tickets outside the stadium. The scramble reflected the difficulty some spectators faced in arranging enough tickets for their groups after the online sales.
“We have been wanting to see the Indian team come and play in Hyderabad for a long time now. There is just a different feeling when you come for an India match,” said Shekhar, who had come with his two children.
Calls for more international matches
For some spectators, the match was also an opportunity to push for more international cricket in the city. Seema, who had been looking forward to the fixture since the tournament schedule was announced, urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to consider Hyderabad for more international games.
“Ever since the schedule for this tournament was announced and we saw Hyderabad as the venue, we were happy and looking forward to attending the match,” she said. “We request the BCCI to hold more international matches here,” Seema added.
Her appeal came as the return of international cricket renewed expectations among spectators that Hyderabad could host more such fixtures. The available source identifies that expectation as a view expressed by spectators, rather than as a confirmed decision on future matches.
Bathukamma adds a cultural element
The sporting occasion also included a programme organised by the Telangana Tourism Department to showcase the State’s cultural heritage during the India-West Indies match.
The programme featured Bathukamma, with traditional floral arrangements highlighting the festival’s association with nature, community and local traditions. Folk artistes also performed during the event, adding a cultural dimension to the match at the Uppal stadium.
The evening therefore brought together the return of international cricket, strong interest in tickets and a presentation of Telangana’s cultural traditions at the venue.
