‘Not tailor-made for us’: Hongkong Post staff say transfer scheme too narrow
Postal workers denied permanent contracts say the government’s special transfer scheme does not offer enough suitable routes for them to continue their careers.
The affected workers have criticised the scheme as too narrow and called for more pathways into roles that match their experience, including workman and artisan positions.
Workers question suitability of available roles
Several affected workers told the South China Morning Post that the concessions offered insufficient support and did not reflect their skills or circumstances.
They said the transfer arrangement was largely focused on clerical positions, while their age, experience and career needs were not adequately considered.
One postal worker, who asked not to be named, said the government had offered priority hiring for other civil service jobs, but suitable vacancies were limited.
He said he had checked the government vacancies system and found that most openings were for doctors, nurses, aircraft engineers and marine officers.
“which are not suitable for postal staff,” he said.
Call for broader transfer options
The worker added, “We cannot get an offer.”
The criticism centres on the gap between the jobs listed under the transfer scheme and the skills of postal staff who were denied permanent contracts.
The workers’ call is for the government to widen the available pathways beyond the limited vacancies currently offered and include roles such as workman and artisan positions.
That would, they say, provide options more closely aligned with their experience and circumstances.
