Hong Kong Raises Foreign Domestic Helpers’ Minimum Wage 2.35% to HK$5,220
Hong Kong’s labour chief says the HK$5,220 monthly minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers is balanced, despite criticism from unions and employers.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han has defended the government’s decision to raise the monthly minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers, saying Hong Kong’s stronger economic performance over the past year was the reason for the increase.
The decision has drawn disappointment from both unions and employers’ groups, which remain unsatisfied with the adjustment.
Government cites stronger economic performance
The monthly minimum wage will rise by 2.35 per cent to HK$5,220 (US$665).
Speaking after a radio programme on Saturday, Sun said the government had sought to keep its annual adjustment mechanism “balanced and acceptable”.
“If you look back, the average annual increase has been between 2 per cent and 2.5 per cent for many years,” Sun said.
The labour minister’s explanation links the wage decision to Hong Kong’s economic performance, while the continuing criticism shows that the increase has not satisfied either unions or employers’ groups.
