AI Boom Fuels Record Hong Kong Export Growth, Economists Predict GDP Boost

Hong Kong’s export sector is set to maintain its remarkable growth, buoyed by the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, with economists projecting a potential uplift in the city’s GDP beyond official forecasts. The surge in demand for AI-related products has already propelled exports to historic highs, according to data and expert analysis.

AI Demand Drives Unprecedented Export Growth

Hong Kong’s exports soared by 53.4% year-on-year in June, reaching HK$641.1 billion (US$81.7 billion), the highest monthly figure since March 1984. This follows a 40.8% rise in May, underscoring the sustained momentum in overseas demand for electronic products that support AI technologies.

Billy Mak Sui-choi, associate professor at Baptist University, attributed the surge to the expanding global appetite for AI hardware and components. He noted that the demand for AI is far from reaching saturation, as no single country has established dominance in the field. “As long as countries see an opportunity to compete, they will continue investing in the necessary hardware,” Mak said.

Broader Ecosystem Fuels Growth

While initial AI demand was centred on Nvidia’s graphics processing units, Mak highlighted that businesses have recognised the need for a broader technological ecosystem. This includes memory chips, photovoltaic modules, and motherboards, which have significantly contributed to Hong Kong’s export boom. The city also benefits as a key re-export hub for goods from mainland China, further amplifying its trade figures.

Why It Matters

The export surge comes as a bright spot for Hong Kong’s economy, which has faced challenges in recent years. Economists believe the global AI boom, coupled with easing trade tensions between China and the United States, has created a favourable environment for the city’s trade sector. Rising export values, driven by higher prices for AI components, are also playing a role in boosting economic performance.

With the AI industry still in its growth phase, Hong Kong appears well-positioned to capitalise on this trend, potentially exceeding GDP growth expectations and reinforcing its status as a critical player in global trade.
