Hong Kong police will deploy officers at every road junction and flyover along the funeral cortege route for the state funeral of Tung Chee-hwa, the city's first chief executive, the South China Morning Post has learned.
A command centre will be set up at police headquarters in Wan Chai, and officers will be stationed to guard three top Beijing officials attending the event this weekend. The officials, Shi Taifeng, Wang Dongfeng and Xia Baolong, are scheduled to arrive on Saturday.
Security personnel will be positioned along the entire route from Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point to Cape Collinson Crematorium in Chai Wan, where the hearse carrying Tung's body will travel, sources said.
Memorial arrangements revised
The Office of Former Chief Executives announced on Thursday that the originally planned public memorial service will now be invitation-only due to venue constraints.
A vigil will be held from 3pm to 10pm on Saturday at the funeral home. The memorial service will start at 9am on Sunday.
The high level of security reflects both Tung's status as Hong Kong's inaugural chief executive and the seniority of the mainland Chinese officials attending the ceremony.
