Hong Kong's first chief executive Tung Chee-hwa dies at 89

Business leaders and associates who worked closely with Tung Chee-hwa have paid tribute to Hong Kong's first chief executive, remembering him as a patriot devoted to the city's interests. Tung, a shipping tycoon who steered Hong Kong through its earliest years under Chinese sovereignty, died on September 8 at the age of 89. He had taken office in 1997 following the city's transfer of sovereignty to China, becoming its inaugural leader in the post-handover era.

State funeral and public tributes planned

Hong Kong is marking Tung's passing with a state funeral this weekend. Authorities have scheduled a vigil on Saturday followed by a memorial service on Sunday. Condolence books will be made available to the public at multiple locations from Friday through Sunday, allowing residents to register their respects.

Tung also served as a former vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), cementing his role as an elder statesman in both Hong Kong and national politics. His tenure is remembered for determined stewardship and dedicated public service.
