Hong Kong bids farewell to founding chief executive Tung Chee-hwa

Hong Kong's political establishment and citizens have begun a two-day farewell to Tung Chee-hwa, the city's first chief executive who died earlier this month, with a vigil at Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point drawing tributes from government figures, business leaders and ordinary residents.

Tung, who passed away at 89 on September 8, will be cremated at Cape Collinson Crematorium in Chai Wan following a state funeral scheduled for the next day, according to information obtained by the South China Morning Post.

Leadership through crisis

The former chief executive steered Hong Kong through some of its most turbulent periods, including the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the Sars outbreak in 2003, and the subsequent V-shaped economic recovery. Mourners paying their respects described Tung in deeply personal terms, with one tribute expressing that he was "like a father to me".

Public mourning arrangements changed

Initial plans for a public memorial service have been modified because of venue limitations, with attendance now restricted to invitation-only guests. The government has instead arranged for members of the public to sign condolence books at three community halls between September 18 and 20, allowing broader participation in mourning the city's founding post-handover leader.

The weekend observances reflect the significant role Tung played in shaping modern Hong Kong during a period of major political and economic transition.
