Hong Kong Chamber Proposes 'Super Partner' Role for Global Business Growth
Hong Kong urged to become a 'super partner' in global business expansion, enhancing ties with overseas markets and aligning with national strategies.
Hong Kong should position itself as a "super partner" to help businesses expand into overseas markets, including ASEAN, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Europe, according to Jonathan Choi Koon-shum, chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC). The call comes as the chamber unveiled 65 recommendations for the city’s maiden five-year plan and the chief executive’s final policy address of his term.
Chamber Advocates Active Investment Role
Choi emphasized that Hong Kong’s role should extend beyond being a "super connector" or "super value-adder" to actively participating in investments and operations abroad. Highlighting the city’s strengths, he noted that Hong Kong operates over 10,000 enterprises in the Pearl River Delta, boasts well-managed infrastructure such as its MTR and airport, and has significant capital reserves for investments. "We should look to upgrade ourselves to be a ‘super partner,’" Choi stated, adding that Hong Kong should not merely facilitate connections but also co-invest and establish a stronger presence in global markets.
Aligning Hong Kong’s Growth with National Priorities
The recommendations coincide with the government’s ongoing public consultation on its first five-year blueprint, launched on June 15. The plan aims to align Hong Kong’s development with China’s national strategies, with the final version expected in the third quarter of this year. Choi also proposed incorporating an annual review mechanism into the blueprint to ensure its effectiveness and adaptability over time.
Why It Matters
The CGCC’s push for Hong Kong to adopt a more proactive global role reflects the city’s ambitions to strengthen its economic ties and diversify its markets amid evolving geopolitical and economic landscapes. By leveraging its financial and infrastructural advantages, Hong Kong could solidify its position as a critical player in international business expansion.
