H Vinoth confirms Vijay's Jana Nayagan is 50% remake of *Bhagavanth Kesari

Director H Vinoth has revealed that Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, is a partial remake of Anil Ravipudi’s Telugu blockbuster Bhagavanth Kesari. Speaking to SCREEN, Vinoth confirmed that while the film draws heavily from the original, only about half of it remains intact in the Tamil adaptation. The rest has been reworked to align with Vijay’s on-screen persona and the expectations of Tamil audiences. “We made changes to the script to fit Vijay accordingly,” Vinoth said, addressing long-standing speculation about the film’s origins.

A Strategic Reimagining for Vijay’s Universe

Vinoth detailed the challenges of adapting Bhagavanth Kesari, a film built around Nandamuri Balakrishna’s larger-than-life presence, to suit Vijay’s more grounded cinematic “universe.” “Balayya sir’s sensibilities and his power are entirely different. He exists in the ‘Balayya Universe’ where anything can happen because he is treated like a god. Vijay sir can also do anything, but he has certain defined limits within his onscreen universe,” Vinoth explained. This required significant changes, especially in the second half of the film, which Vinoth described as being “largely my own creation.”

The director also noted the broader differences between Telugu and Tamil commercial cinema. While Telugu films often prioritize entertainment over strict adherence to logic, Tamil audiences expect a balance between mass appeal and narrative coherence. “The original director has given consecutive hits, so we couldn’t spoil the core of the film while adapting it to Tamil sensibilities,” he said.

Vijay’s Personal Investment in the Project

Vinoth revealed that Vijay was deeply involved in the decision to remake Bhagavanth Kesari. When Vinoth expressed doubts about taking on another remake, Vijay personally explained, scene by scene, why the story resonated with him. This echoes Vinoth’s previous collaboration with Ajith Kumar on Nerkonda Paarvai, where both stars shared a commitment to themes of women empowerment. “Vijay sir is into women empowerment, the same I saw with Ajith sir,” Vinoth remarked.

A Film Tailored for Tamil Sensibilities

Vinoth provided a precise breakdown of how much of the original remains in Jana Nayagan: “The first half has 60% of the film, the second half has 20%.” The second half, in particular, has been restructured to emphasize political conflict and themes of democracy versus destruction, aligning with Vijay’s evolving public image as he prepares for a potential political career.

Star-Studded Cast and Release Details

Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast, including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani. The film is set to release worldwide on July 23.

This hybrid approach to remaking Bhagavanth Kesari reflects not only Vinoth’s creative vision but also Vijay’s growing influence as both an actor and a public figure, making Jana Nayagan one of the most anticipated Tamil releases of the year.
