Doctor assaulted by patient’s son for filming CPR at Pune hospital

A doctor at Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital was allegedly assaulted by a patient’s son after being asked not to record a video of CPR treatment. The patient, who had suffered a cardiac arrest, later died at the hospital. The incident occurred on Saturday and has since led to a police case against the accused.

Video Recording Request Sparks Assault

The accused, a 30-year-old resident of Ghorpadi, brought his father to the government-run hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest. As a trainee doctor in the emergency ward attempted to revive the patient using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the son began recording the procedure on his mobile phone. When the doctor requested him to stop filming, the man allegedly became enraged and attacked the doctor.

Legal Action Initiated Against the Accused

Following the assault, the doctor filed a complaint, prompting the police to book the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including Section 132, which pertains to deterring a public servant from performing their duty. Additional charges were filed under Sections 351 and 352, as well as provisions of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act.

Patient Pronounced Dead; Accused Released Pending Investigation

Sub-inspector Ganesh Wankhade confirmed that the patient was declared dead at the hospital. While the accused was not immediately arrested, he was issued a notice in accordance with legal procedures and will remain under investigation.
