Connor McDavid's Wife Lauren Kyle Celebrates as Oilers Captain Matches Wayne Gretzky's Rare Feat

Connor McDavid has once again etched his name alongside hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, this time by winning his fifth Ted Lindsay Award, an honor voted on by NHL players to recognize the league's most outstanding performer. McDavid is now only the second player in NHL history to achieve this milestone, with Gretzky being the first to do so back in 1987.

The Edmonton Oilers captain learned about his latest accolade in a surprise moment orchestrated by his wife, Lauren Kyle. What began as a seemingly ordinary outing at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ontario, turned into an unforgettable memory. McDavid, who thought he was simply playing nine holes of golf with Kyle, was caught off guard when a convoy of golf carts approached near the ninth hole. The carts carried his parents, brother, and four childhood friends, with his father, Brian, presenting him with the prestigious trophy. Unbeknownst to McDavid, Kyle had been planning the surprise for days.

"Connor just thinks that we are going to play nine (holes) and have dinner afterward. We typically do that during the week, so he has no idea what to expect," Kyle had shared beforehand. Following the reveal, she expressed her pride by sharing the Oilers' announcement on her Instagram story, accompanied by a simple "So proud" and a white heart emoji.

McDavid, visibly surprised and moved, reflected on the significance of the award, stating, "This award, coming from the guys that you play against every single night and battle against every single night, to have them recognize me with an award like this, means so much." His dominant performance this season, which included a league-leading 138 points from 48 goals and 90 assists, also earned him his sixth Art Ross Trophy.

The 26-year-old has now won the Ted Lindsay Award in five seasons: 2016-17, 2017-18, 2020-21, 2022-23, and 2023-24. The voting players chose him over Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov and San Jose's Macklin Celebrini, further cementing his status as one of the NHL's most respected talents.

For McDavid and Kyle, who began their relationship on a blind date in 2015 and tied the knot in July 2024, this moment was another shared milestone in their journey together. The joy on McDavid's face during the surprise underscored the significance of the occasion, both as a career achievement and a personal celebration with his closest loved ones.
