The Washington Capitals have doubled down on their belief in head coach Spencer Carbery, extending his contract despite the team missing the playoffs in the 2025-26 NHL season. The franchise announced on Thursday that Carbery, 44, has signed a multiyear extension, securing his position after completing three seasons with the team. The deal comes as Carbery enters the final year of the four-year contract he signed upon joining the Capitals in 2023.

Washington’s decision to extend Carbery’s tenure underscores the organization’s confidence in his leadership, even after a disappointing season. Under Carbery, the Capitals have recorded a 134-83-29 record, making the playoffs in his first two seasons. The team’s high point came in the 2024-25 season, when they achieved 51 wins, clinched the Metropolitan Division title, led the Eastern Conference with 111 points, and finished third overall in the NHL standings. Carbery’s efforts that season earned him the prestigious Jack Adams Award for NHL Coach of the Year, making him the first coach to win the honor in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL.

However, the 2025-26 season marked a decline, with the Capitals finishing 43-30-9 and missing the playoffs by just four points. Despite this setback, the franchise opted to extend Carbery’s contract rather than risk a “lame-duck” coaching year.

General Manager and Senior Vice President Chris Patrick had already made the team’s stance clear earlier in the year. In an April interview, Patrick expressed unwavering support for Carbery, calling him “100 percent our coach now and in the future.” He praised Carbery’s ability to gain the respect of veteran players, develop young talent, and implement his system effectively. “As long as we can have him, we will,” Patrick said, signaling the organization’s long-term commitment to its head coach.

In a statement on Thursday, Patrick emphasized Carbery’s strengths in fostering player development and building strong relationships with both young players and veterans. “Since joining our organization, Spencer has played an important role in the development of many of our young players while also earning the respect and trust of our veteran leaders,” Patrick said. He highlighted Carbery’s communication skills, leadership, and ability to create a positive and accountable team culture.

The Capitals’ endorsement of Carbery comes at a time of transition for the team. Despite having veterans like Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson, Washington fielded one of the NHL’s younger rosters this season, ranking 21st in age according to Elite Prospects. The team also has significant financial flexibility, with $31.35 million in projected cap space, according to PuckPedia, to address roster needs. Restricted free agents Hendrix Lapierre and Connor McMichael will require new contracts, and Ovechkin, the 40-year-old captain and all-time leading NHL goal scorer, has yet to announce his plans for the upcoming season.

While Carbery’s extension provides stability behind the bench, the Capitals now face the challenge of assembling a roster capable of returning to playoff contention. As ESPN’s Ryan S. Clark noted, the franchise’s decision to back Carbery signals a commitment to a broader transition, but the next steps will depend on the front office’s ability to build a competitive team around him.
