Computer Science and ECE Top Choices in TNEA 2026 Counselling

At the conclusion of Round One of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 counselling, computer science and engineering (CSE) and its allied subjects emerged as the top choice among students, followed by electronics and communications engineering (ECE). Together, these fields accounted for the majority of seats filled, reflecting a sustained demand for technology-focused disciplines in the state.

CSE Leads; ECE and EEE Show Promise

Among the top 100 students participating in the counselling, 73 opted for CSE and allied courses, while 26 chose ECE. Mechanical engineering saw only one taker in this elite group. Overall, more than half of the seats filled in Round One were for CSE, while ECE accounted for over 20%. Electrical and electronics engineering (EEE), though less popular, registered a slight increase in demand compared to previous years.

Career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi noted a growing interest in core engineering subjects, including ECE, EEE, and mechanical engineering, though civil engineering and other traditional branches struggled to attract students.

Regional Trends: Coimbatore Outshines Chennai

Region-wise, Coimbatore continued to outperform Chennai in attracting students. Factors such as better locational access, institutional reputation, and Coimbatore's status as a hub for textiles, IT, and accessories manufacturing contributed to its appeal. Gandhi explained that students from districts like Salem, Dharmapuri, and Tirunelveli often prefer Coimbatore over Chennai for their engineering education.

Concerns Over Absenteeism and Awareness

Absenteeism during the first round rose to 35%, up three percentage points from last year. Analysts attribute this to students opting for medicine or other courses, or errors in their choice-filling process. Gandhi highlighted a lack of awareness among rural students, some of whom chose tier-two colleges over National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-ranked institutions. Independent analyst R. Ashwin also observed that private colleges filled 85% of their seats in Round One, likely due to their superior placement records and infrastructure.

Implications for Round Two

For students awaiting Round Two, Gandhi advised that those with cut-off marks between 160 and 170 could still secure seats in top institutions, a scenario that was unlikely last year. Ashwin recommended that students scoring below 160 maximize their choice combinations to improve their chances of admission.

The trends from Round One underscore the enduring popularity of technology-driven courses and the need for improved awareness among students regarding institutional rankings and opportunities. As counselling progresses, these insights will shape the choices and strategies of thousands of aspiring engineers across Tamil Nadu.
