Cochin Shipyard begins construction of Navy's first next-generation missile vessel

Cochin Shipyard Limited has commenced construction of the Indian Navy's first next-generation missile vessel, marking a key milestone in the six-ship programme to strengthen the fleet's offensive and defensive capabilities.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition from Integrated Headquarters, (Indian Navy), laid the keel at the yard in the presence of Jose V.J., chairman and managing director, CSL, Rear Admiral Kapil Mehta, and S. Harikrishnan, director (operations) CSL.

Weapon systems and operational roles

The next-generation missile vessels are designed as high-speed platforms carrying an array of weapons and sensors, including a surface-to-surface missile system, anti-missile defence system, and air surveillance and fire control radars, according to a communication.

Their primary role will be to provide offensive capability against enemy warships, merchantmen, and land targets. In defensive operations, the vessels will be deployed for local naval defence and seaward defence of offshore development areas.

Each ship will accommodate a complement of 80 personnel and achieve a maximum speed of 33 knots. CSL is building all six vessels under the NGMV programme for the Indian Navy.
