Chinese regulators order carmakers to prioritize safety over untested new technology features

Chinese automotive regulators have ordered manufacturers to prioritise vehicle quality over flashy technological features, barring any new products and technologies that fail to meet tougher approval standards.

Vice-Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xin Guobin announced at a Beijing news conference on Wednesday that the move follows a pattern of "reckless innovative designs" being installed in vehicles without adequate testing and verification. The directive comes as part of a nationwide inspection campaign assessing the quality of domestically manufactured cars that was unveiled this week.

Safety concerns trigger regulatory action

The crackdown responds directly to several high-profile incidents that raised public alarm about vehicle quality and autonomous driving safety. "Several accidents and growing consumer complaints have spurred the regulators into action," said Gao Shen, an independent analyst in Shanghai.

The stricter oversight will force Chinese carmakers to fundamentally shift their development priorities, according to industry observers. "With improved oversight, carmakers will have to shift their focus from making their vehicles more intelligent to ensuring quality," Gao said.

Market impact expected

Dealers and analysts predict the quality inspection campaign will prompt some consumers to delay vehicle purchases, worsening the already bearish outlook for China's automotive sector. The warning signals a regulatory pivot away from the rapid technological innovation that has characterised China's electric vehicle boom toward a more cautious, safety-first approach.
