China offers Brics nations open-source AI models and manufacturing support

Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced Beijing will assist Brics nations in developing open-source large language models and establishing smart manufacturing facilities, marking a fresh push to deepen technology partnerships with the Global South.

Speaking at the second day of the Brics summit in New Delhi, Xi outlined these two key initiatives as central to promoting economic growth and technological development across member states. The Chinese leader did not specify timelines or investment figures for the assistance programmes.

Training for emerging economies

Beyond infrastructure and software support, Beijing plans to offer training for young talent from other member states in advanced technology and innovation, according to state news agency Xinhua. The proposal positions China as a technology provider for developing economies seeking to build domestic capabilities in artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

The announcement comes as Brics countries, originally Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, seek to expand cooperation in technology and reduce dependence on Western platforms and supply chains.
