Chinese consumer platforms race to build proprietary AI models in-house

China's consumer internet platforms are developing proprietary artificial intelligence models to power their own services, a strategic shift that places them alongside dedicated AI laboratories in the race to integrate large language models into commercial applications.

RedNote's research division, Dots Studio, has released Dots3-Note Preview, a 280-billion-parameter open-weight model that the company claims rivals systems from OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek and Z.ai in specific benchmark tasks. The move marks a technical pivot for a platform primarily associated with lifestyle content including fashion, travel and shopping recommendations.

Consumer platforms bypass third-party AI providers

The in-house development trend extends across China's digital economy, encompassing companies in e-commerce, video gaming, social media and travel sectors. These consumer-facing businesses are choosing to build foundation models tailored to their specific ecosystems rather than purchasing access from external AI vendors.

Industry analysts characterize the pattern as an operational shift across China's technology sector, where platforms are investing in custom AI infrastructure instead of relying solely on third-party providers.

Domestic AI competition intensifies beyond specialist labs

While pure-play AI companies such as DeepSeek, Z.ai (Zhipu AI), Moonshot AI and MiniMax have attracted international attention for competing with Silicon Valley developers, the parallel buildout by established internet platforms represents a less visible but equally significant development.

Dots Studio framed its research goals in broad terms, stating in a blog post that it aimed to "build AI that benefits everyone and helps people solve the many problems they encounter in life". The laboratory positions its work as part of RedNote's expansion beyond content curation into core AI capabilities.

The dual-track emergence of both specialized AI laboratories and integrated platform models suggests China's artificial intelligence sector is diversifying beyond concentrated research hubs, embedding large language model capabilities directly into services that reach hundreds of millions of daily users.
