Chinese coal mine deploys 100 autonomous electric trucks in extreme conditions

A Chinese open-pit coal mine in Inner Mongolia has deployed a fleet of 100 autonomous electric trucks, moving beyond trial operations to reshape daily extraction work in one of the country's most challenging environments.

The mine, located in a region holding China's largest coal reserves, operates in extreme conditions where winter temperatures drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Before the autonomous fleet arrived, hundreds of drivers clad in heavy winter gear navigated icy roads while facing the risk of frostbite as they transported coal loads through the pit. Dense fog and snowfall often forced work stoppages when visibility fell too low, creating fears of fatal crashes.

Performance After the Pilot Phase

More than a year has passed since the self-driving vehicles moved past the experimental stage, providing an opportunity to evaluate how the technology performs at scale and whether it can be expanded further to modernize China's traditional energy sector.

"The autonomous electric trucks have helped us cut operating costs, improve safety and increase efficiency," said Zhao Yaozhong, deputy manager for technology at the mine.

The vast open-pit mine cuts deep into the earth and remains shrouded in clouds of dust, a typical feature of large-scale coal extraction sites in Inner Mongolia. The transition from human-operated diesel trucks to a substantial autonomous electric fleet marks a significant operational shift for an industry long reliant on conventional mining methods.
