China reveals 800-passenger flying-wing jet design in aviation breakthrough

A Chinese research team has revealed an aerodynamic model for a groundbreaking flying-wing passenger aircraft capable of carrying over 800 passengers. This futuristic design marks a significant step in China’s expanding large aircraft programme.

Revolutionary Design with Massive Wingspan

The proposed aircraft departs from traditional designs by merging the fuselage, wings, and tail into a single, broad lifting body. Its wingspan is reported to be 1.6 times larger than that of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. This innovative configuration could redefine commercial aviation by accommodating more passengers than the world’s largest existing airliners.

Part of a Broader Aviation Strategy

The flying-wing project is part of China’s broader efforts to establish itself as a major player in global aviation. Alongside this initiative, the country is advancing the development of the C929, a 280-seat long-range widebody jet slated for its maiden flight around 2030. Additionally, work continues on the C949, a supersonic airliner inspired by NASA’s X-59 technology.
