Guangzhou airport surges to 19th in global connectivity rankings after terminal expansion

Chinese airports have strengthened their positions in global connectivity rankings, driven by expanded international networks and infrastructure upgrades, according to aviation analytics firm OAG.

Guangzhou leads with steepest climb

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China recorded the fastest rise among the world's most connected hubs, jumping 17 positions to 19th place from 36th in the previous year, according to OAG's Megahubs 2026 report released on Wednesday. An OAG spokeswoman described its advance as the biggest of any airport globally.

The surge followed the October opening of the airport's third terminal, which has enhanced air connections across the region, including to neighbouring Hong Kong and Macau. The Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office reported that passenger and flight volumes increased "sharply" at the airport in early 2026, reflecting a rebound in air-travel demand.

The airport now operates 146 international routes, served by 80 airlines.

Broader gains for Chinese hubs

Chinese airports overall stood out in the rankings as carriers expanded their international networks with added flights. Airports in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong also posted improvements in their connectivity standings.

The annual list, compiled by aviation data firm OAG, measures airports based on the number and frequency of available connections.
