China Tests Future of Shipping on Its Next Major Trade Corridor: A US$10 Billion Canal

China has begun testing the future of shipping on a new artificial waterway in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, marking a significant step in the development of a US$10 billion megaproject designed to enhance trade links with Southeast Asia. The canal aims to connect inland provinces to global shipping routes and strategically link the region to the Gulf of Tonkin, situated between China and Vietnam.

Since Wednesday, intelligent barges and other vessels have been undergoing trials on the canal as part of preparations for its commissioning. These vessels, powered by liquefied natural gas and equipped with advanced multi-sensor and camera systems, are capable of transmitting real-time navigation and hydrographic data to other ships, according to Guangxi authorities and state broadcaster CCTV. The region's marine and shipping authority reported smooth progress during the trials.

The tests have showcased autonomous barges equipped with high-precision sensors, radars, and communication networks, performing automated mooring operations. These vessels are specifically designed to transport containers and bulk cargo, optimizing the canal’s shipping capacity while reducing costs and travel time. The canal’s main lock, located in Pinglu, is a massive structure measuring 300 meters in length, 34 meters in width, and 8 meters in depth, capable of accommodating six ships simultaneously.

Additional vessels, including those designed to navigate both the canal and the high seas of the Gulf of Tonkin—known in China as the Beibu Gulf—are expected to be delivered by August. These deliveries will precede the canal’s planned test run in September, signaling the project's readiness to transform regional trade dynamics.
