Chakma Autonomous District Council to implement NEP and Mizo Speaking Day
Chakma Autonomous District Council in Mizoram plans to roll out NEP by 2027-28 and introduce Mizo Speaking Day weekly in schools.
The Chakma Autonomous District Council has decided to begin preparations for two school-level changes: implementation of the National Education Policy from the 2027-28 academic session and a weekly language initiative called “Mizo Speaking Day” in its primary and middle schools, an official said on Monday (September 28, 2026).
The council, which functions in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, will introduce the measures in schools under its jurisdiction, the official said.
Decisions taken at Kamalanagar meeting
The decisions were taken at a meeting on educational administration held at the council headquarters in Kamalanagar on Sunday, the official said.
The meeting was chaired by Executive Member in-charge of Education Doymoy Daveng Chakma.
It resolved that every Wednesday will be observed as “Mizo Speaking Day” in all primary and middle schools within the CADC area.
The stated purpose of the initiative is to provide students regular opportunities to learn and practice the Mizo language.
A committee headed by Primary Education Department Office Superintendent Satish Chakma has been constituted to prepare the guidelines and modalities for implementing the “Mizo Speaking Day” initiative, the official said.
NEP rollout planned from 2027-28
The meeting also decided to adopt and implement the National Education Policy from 2027-28, in line with the policy framework and guidelines of the Mizoram government, the official said.
The District School Education Board and the concerned education departments will undertake preparatory measures for the rollout.
They will also issue implementation guidelines for the NEP process.
The decision is significant for the council’s school administration because the NEP rollout has been tied to preparatory action by the District School Education Board and education departments before implementation begins from the 2027-28 academic session.
Teacher rules, literacy programme and meditation
The meeting also approved in principle the draft Chakma Autonomous District Council (Transfer and Posting of Elementary School Teachers) Rules, 2026.
A review committee headed by education officer Punya Jagat Talukdar has been tasked with examining the draft rules.
The committee has been asked to finalise the draft by October 10 before placing it before the executive committee for consideration.
The meeting further resolved to launch a systematic literacy programme in CADC, subject to the executive committee's approval and availability of funds.
It also decided to introduce 10 minutes of “Anapana” meditation every Friday in all primary and middle schools, the official said.
The decisions were published on September 28, 2026, at 12:23 pm IST.
