Campaigning Ends for Bankipur Bypoll as BJP Faces JSP, RJD Challenge

Campaigning for the Bankipur Assembly byelection in Bihar concluded on Tuesday, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest on July 30. The BJP is fighting to retain the seat vacated by its national president, Nitin Nabin, who moved to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. The party has fielded 32-year-old Neeraj Kumar Sinha, a youth wing leader, in its bid to hold the constituency.

Prashant Kishor Makes Electoral Debut

The byelection will also witness the electoral debut of Prashant Kishor, the 49-year-old founder of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP). Kishor’s party, which failed to secure any seats in last year’s Assembly elections, is looking to establish a foothold in Bihar politics. Meanwhile, the Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has nominated Rekha Kumari, who was the runner-up in the last election for the seat. Kumari is banking on support from RJD’s core voter base, with party working president Tejashwi Yadav joining the campaign just a day before it ended.

Constituency Dynamics and Key Issues

The Bankipur constituency, home to nearly four lakh voters, is known for its diverse demographic composition. The Kayasth and Yadav communities form about 25% of the electorate, while Muslims and Chandravanshis together account for nearly 20%. Other communities, including Vaishyas, Dalits, Bhumihars, Rajputs, Brahmins, Kurmis, and Kushwahas, each represent between 3% and 8% of the voter base.

While caste dynamics often play a significant role in Bihar elections, some voters indicated a shift in priorities. “We are not looking at caste; for us, the candidate is more important,” said Sanjay Gupta, a trader from Meethapur, during a BJP roadshow. However, pressing issues like the NEET paper leak controversy and allegations of theft in Ram Temple donations have also surfaced in voter discussions.

High-Stakes Contest

Though 25 candidates are in the fray, the battle is widely seen as a three-way contest between the BJP, JSP, and RJD. Kishor, addressing gatherings in Peermuhani, Sabzibagh, and Jai Prakash Nagar, urged voters to consider their children’s future when casting their ballots. The BJP, meanwhile, has leaned heavily on its organizational machinery to maintain its hold on the seat, which Nabin had won by a margin of over 50,000 votes in the last election.

The results of the byelection will be declared on August 3, with all eyes on whether the BJP can retain its stronghold or if Prashant Kishor’s JSP can make a breakthrough in Bihar’s political landscape.
