BJP appoints State in-charges; Smriti Irani gets Haryana, Chhatti

The BJP has put in place a fresh organisational map for all 28 States and eight Union territories, naming in-charges and co-in-charges with immediate effect under appointments made by party president Nitin Nabin, according to a party notification.

The appointments were announced on Wednesday (September 23, 2026), officials said.

National general secretary Smriti Irani has been assigned Haryana and Chhattisgarh, while party vice-president Ram Madhav has been appointed political affairs in-charge for Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand, according to the notification.

Communication department reshuffle

Alongside the State and Union territory assignments, the BJP has reshuffled responsibilities in its communication department, which includes the party’s national media cell and social media unit.

Anil Baluni has been elevated as coordinator of the communication department.

Ashish Usha Agrawal, who was recently appointed co-convenor of the BJP’s national media department, has been elevated as its convenor.

The convenor post had so far been held by Mr. Baluni.

“All these appointments made by BJP president Nitin Nabin come into effect immediately,” the party said in the notification.

Key assignments in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra

Senior BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe will serve as the in-charge for Delhi, according to the notification.

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and Darshana Jardosh will be the co-in-charges for Delhi.

BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde has been made the in-charge for Uttar Pradesh.

Jagdish Patel, Medha Kulkarni, Pardeep Varma and Anand Ojha have been named co-in-charges for Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh assignment comes as Assembly polls are due in the State next year.

BJP vice-president Baijayant Jay Panda has been made in-charge for Maharashtra.

Amit Malviya, Sadanand Shet Tanawade and Kamaljeet Sehrawat have been named co-in-charges for Maharashtra.

Smriti Irani, Harish Dwivedi and Tarun Chugh get State roles

Smriti Irani, the national general secretary of the BJP, has been made the in-charge for Haryana and Chhattisgarh.

Harish Dwivedi, also a national general secretary, will serve as the in-charge for Bihar and Karnataka.

Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh has been named in-charge for Gujarat.

Elections are due in Gujarat next year.

Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana and West Bengal

Punjab, another State that will go to the polls next year, has been assigned to Satish Poonia as in-charge.

Former Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva and Rajya Sabha MP Alka Gurjar have been named co-in-charges for Punjab.

Poonia has also been appointed in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP national general secretary Sunil Bansal has been appointed in-charge for Telangana and West Bengal.

He was already serving as in-charge for Bengal after succeeding Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Manipur

BJP vice-president Ram Madhav has been appointed political affairs in-charge for Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand, according to the notification.

Lok Sabha MP D Purandeswari has been assigned Odisha.

National secretary Swadesh Singh has been named the co-in-charge for Odisha.

BJP MLA from Assam, Rajeep Roy, has been assigned Manipur.

Manipur is another State where elections are due next year.

Madhya Pradesh and Goa

Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has been made the in-charge for Madhya Pradesh.

Ex-Union Minister Bharati Pravin Pawar has been assigned Goa.

The coastal State goes to polls next year.

The list matters organisationally because it allocates central party responsibility across every State and Union territory, while also identifying in-charges for several States where elections are due next year.
