Bengaluru Hosts First-Ever Freedom Habba to Celebrate Independence Day

In a vibrant celebration of India's 79th Independence Day, Bengaluru witnessed its inaugural Freedom Habba on Saturday, held in front of the iconic Vidhana Soudha. Organised by the Karnataka government, the event brought together diverse communities from across the country to showcase their rich cultural heritage through music, dance, and folk traditions.

Parade of Folk Arts and Traditions

The festival featured performances from over 30 teams representing various states and districts. Karnataka’s Yakshagana, Veeragaase, and Hulivesha shared the stage with Maharashtra’s dhol tasha, Gujarat’s Garba, West Bengal’s Dhanuchi Naach, and Sikh martial arts like Chakkar bazi and Gatka. Participants paraded their art forms along a half-kilometer stretch before reaching the stage at Vidhana Soudha’s entrance, where they explained the cultural significance of their performances.

Among the performers was Kalamilana, a team led by Amit J from Government Arts College, Bengaluru. “We were thrilled to showcase Yakshagana when invited by the government,” he said. Another group, Kuntur Kumara, traveled from Mandya district to present Puje Kunitha, a traditional dance involving acrobatic movements and balancing decorated structures on their heads. This art form is deeply rooted in the worship of village deities across Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Channapattana.

Immersive Exhibits Highlight Freedom Struggle

Beyond the performances, the Freedom Habba featured a living museum called India’s Freedom Trail, which detailed key moments in the independence movement, such as the Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movement. District-themed pavilions showcased Karnataka’s contributions to the freedom struggle, including tributes to Sangolli Rayanna and Rani Chennamma. Visitors also explored Constitution Square and activity zones for children.

Vaishnavi R, a Bengaluru resident, shared her excitement about the event. “I had never seen Vidhana Soudha up close before. The guided tour explained its architectural significance, and being part of the Freedom Habba made this Independence Day truly special.”

Logistical Challenges for Commuters

While the event drew crowds, it also caused confusion for visitors to Cubbon Park, which closed at 6 p.m. Police directed park-goers to alternative exits, creating bottlenecks for those not attending the festival. Metro services at nearby stations were temporarily halted, forcing commuters to travel via MG Road and Kempegowda Metro stations until services resumed after the event ended at 9:30 p.m.
