Authorities demolish six illegal mosques and madrassas near India-Pakistan border

In a significant anti-encroachment operation, authorities in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district demolished six alleged illegal mosques and madrassas near the India-Pakistan border on Thursday. The structures were reportedly built on government land, including areas reserved for families displaced by the Pong Dam project, officials confirmed on Friday.

Operation Targets Border Villages

The demolitions were part of "Operation Clean," conducted in Nachna, Tanot, and Shahgarh areas, covering villages such as Mirpura, Hindolon Ki Dhani, Ahmadpura, and Dhanana. Earthmovers were deployed to remove the structures under the supervision of revenue, police, and administrative officials. The campaign spanned areas within 50 kilometres of the international border, a region considered highly sensitive due to its proximity to Pakistan.

Court Clears Path for Action

The drive resumed after the Rajasthan High Court's Jodhpur Bench dismissed petitions challenging eviction and show-cause notices issued to religious institutions in the border belt. In its July 13 order, the court emphasized that national security takes precedence, paving the way for the administration to proceed with the demolitions.

Security Measures in Place

Given the strategic importance of the region, heavy police and security deployment accompanied the operation to prevent any disruptions. Officials reported that the drive was completed peacefully without any law-and-order issues.

This development underscores the administration's focus on addressing unauthorized constructions in sensitive border areas, particularly those on government land earmarked for displaced families. The demolitions also highlight the intersection of land-use enforcement and national security concerns in the region.
