Apple set to launch iPhone Air 2 with major upgrades in Spring 2027

Apple is reportedly gearing up to release the second-generation iPhone Air in spring 2027, introducing three significant upgrades aimed at addressing the shortcomings of the original model. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device, internally code-named "V62," has entered advanced testing stages. One of the most notable changes is the addition of a second rear camera, a feature that many buyers of the first iPhone Air had requested.

The original iPhone Air, launched in September 2025, was celebrated as Apple's thinnest phone to date. However, its slim design came at the cost of functionality, particularly in the camera department. The first-generation model featured a single 48MP wide lens, which lagged behind even the more affordable iPhone 17, equipped with dual cameras. The iPhone Air 2 seeks to rectify this by adding an ultrawide lens alongside the wide one. However, a telephoto lens will not be included in this iteration.

Beyond the camera, Apple is targeting two other areas for improvement. The second upgrade focuses on enhancing battery life, one of the original model's most criticized aspects. While it remains unclear whether the improvement will come from a larger battery or more efficient power management, the thin design of the iPhone Air may limit the possibility of increasing battery size.

The third upgrade lies in the device's performance. The iPhone Air 2 will feature Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on the company's advanced 2nm process. This cutting-edge silicon, which will also power the iPhone 18 Pro, is expected to deliver greater efficiency, potentially extending battery life without adding bulk to the device. Despite these internal changes, the iPhone Air 2 will retain the same design as its predecessor.

The release of the iPhone Air 2 is expected to align with Apple's revised product calendar, debuting alongside the standard iPhone 18 next spring. This follows the anticipated launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable device in September 2026.

The introduction of a second-generation iPhone Air signals Apple's commitment to the model as a permanent fixture in its product lineup, rather than a one-off experiment on the path to foldable devices.
