Apple unveils iPhone 18 Pro with variable aperture camera at September event

Apple will unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, marking the first major product launch under new CEO John Ternus and introducing a split release strategy that pushes the standard iPhone 18 to spring 2027.

Pro Models Lead September Launch

The iPhone 18 Pro lineup will maintain design continuity with its predecessors, with iPhone 17 Pro cases expected to fit the new models. Minor refinements include a smaller Dynamic Island, though earlier speculation about under-display Face ID will not materialize. Apple plans to offer dark cherry, light blue, and silver color options, notably excluding a black variant.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max may be slightly thicker and heavier to accommodate a larger 5,567 mAh battery, up from the iPhone 17 Pro Max's 5,088 mAh capacity. Combined with efficiency improvements from the 2nm A20 Pro chip and a new LTPO+ display technology, battery life should see noticeable gains.

Camera System Upgrades

Apple will introduce a DSLR-like variable aperture to the main rear camera, allowing photographers greater control over exposure and depth of field. A smaller aperture in bright conditions could improve exposure, while a larger opening in low light would reduce grain and produce sharper images. Some rumors suggest this feature may be exclusive to the Pro Max model.

The telephoto lens will gain a wider aperture for improved light capture, and Apple may deploy a three-layer stacked image sensor developed by Samsung to enhance responsiveness and low-light performance. The Camera Control button could be simplified by eliminating the capacitive layer used for swiping adjustments.

Modem and Pricing Questions

The iPhone 18 Pro models may feature Apple's house-designed C2 modem, though U.S. variants could retain Qualcomm modems to support mmWave 5G, as it remains unclear whether Apple's C2 includes that capability. Prices will climb between $100 and $300 due to increased memory and storage costs.

Split Release Strategy

The standard iPhone 18 and the next-generation iPhone Air have been delayed until spring 2027, representing Apple's first split iPhone cycle in years. This strategy places premium hardware in the fall and positions affordable models for later release.

Apple typically schedules preorders for the Friday following its September event, but that date falls on September 11 this year. In 2015, when preorders last overlapped with 9/11, Apple moved them to Saturday. If the pattern holds, iPhone 18 Pro preorders could begin at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time on September 12, with devices launching September 18.

The event also marks Ternus's debut as CEO after formally succeeding Tim Cook on September 1, with Cook now serving as executive chairman. Ternus, who spent over two decades building Apple hardware and now oversees a combined hardware-and-silicon organization led by Johny Srouji, will use the keynote to signal whether Apple will maintain operational discipline or push harder into new product categories.
