Apple's iPhone 18 Pro launch set for September 9 with major hardware upgrades

Apple is preparing to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Wednesday, September 9, marking a significant departure from the company's usual Tuesday keynote schedule, according to multiple industry reports. The event announcement is expected as early as Tuesday, August 25, though Wednesday, August 26 remains another strong possibility.

The shift to a Wednesday keynote stems from Apple's historical reluctance to hold major product launches the day after Labor Day, which falls on Monday, September 7 this year. When Labor Day last occurred on this date in 2015, Apple similarly scheduled its iPhone event for Wednesday, September 9.

Release Timeline and Pre-Order Strategy

Pre-orders will likely open on Saturday, September 12, rather than the customary Friday. Apple appears set to avoid September 11, the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, just as it did in 2015 when pre-orders began on Saturday, September 12 instead of Friday, September 11. The phones are expected to reach customers on Friday, September 18.

The accompanying iOS software will launch around Monday, September 14, compatible with devices from the iPhone 11 onwards.

Performance Leap With 2nm Chip Architecture

The iPhone 18 Pro models are rumored to feature Apple's A20 Pro chip, the company's first smartphone processor built on TSMC's 2nm manufacturing process. According to Weibo tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the chip could deliver approximately 18 percent faster performance than the A19 Pro while consuming up to 30 percent less power. The chip is also expected to utilize TSMC's newer Gate-All-Around technology.

However, this cutting-edge technology may increase production costs, with reports suggesting the overall bill of materials for the iPhone 18 Pro could rise significantly.

Battery Capacity Increases Substantially

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to pack a 5,425mAh battery in the US version, while variants with physical SIM slots could feature a 5,235mAh cell. This represents roughly a 10 percent increase over the iPhone 17 Pro Max's reported capacities of 5,088mAh and 4,823mAh respectively.

The battery improvements may work in tandem with the more efficient A20 Pro chip and Apple's new C2 modem to extend usage time.

In-House Modem Marks Independence From Qualcomm

Apple is expected to deploy its C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro series, advancing the company's move away from Qualcomm hardware. The in-house modem is anticipated to improve power efficiency and cellular performance while giving Apple greater control over hardware-software integration.

However, tipster Ice Universe claims this feature may be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max due to space requirements. Both Pro models are still expected to feature three 48-megapixel rear cameras covering main, ultra-wide, and telephoto functions, with the front camera remaining at 18 megapixels.

Apple may also simplify the Camera Control button by removing some touch-sensitive components while retaining core camera controls.

Display and Connectivity Enhancements

The Dynamic Island cutout could shrink noticeably, with reports suggesting Apple may move portions of Face ID technology beneath the display. The screens are expected to adopt LTPO+ technology for more precise OLED control and reduced power consumption.

Satellite connectivity features may expand beyond emergency services, with Apple reportedly exploring satellite-based 5G connectivity that could function in remote areas without traditional mobile towers.

Pricing Pressure Expected in India

The iPhone 17 Pro currently starts at Rs 1,34,900 in India, while the iPhone 18 Pro could begin around Rs 1,39,900. Some reports suggest potential increases of Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 depending on model and storage configuration, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max potentially starting around Rs 1,54,900.

Apple is also expected to unveil its first foldable device and new Apple Watch models at the September 9 event, with the base iPhone 18 not expected until spring 2027. The keynote will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, Cupertino, beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
