Afghan asylum seeker sentenced to life for Munich car-ramming attack

A German court on Thursday sentenced 25-year-old Farhad N., an Afghan asylum seeker, to life imprisonment for a car-ramming attack in Munich last year that killed a two-year-old girl and her mother, and injured dozens of others. Prosecutors argued that the attack was driven by "religious motivation".

Court Rules on "Particular Gravity of Guilt"

The Munich court convicted Farhad N. of two counts of murder, 23 counts of attempted murder, and 22 counts of bodily harm, 19 of which were classified as serious. The court also determined that the crimes carried a "particular gravity of guilt," a legal designation in Germany that significantly reduces the likelihood of parole. This means Farhad N. is unlikely to ever be released from prison.

Attack During Trade Union March

The incident occurred during a 1,400-strong trade union march in Munich, where Farhad N., then 24, drove a Mini Cooper into the crowd. The impact was catastrophic, sending a 37-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter flying 10 metres through the air. The attack left a trail of devastation, with dozens of injuries reported.
