78 Telangana prison inmates pass SSC exams, earn special remission

In a significant step towards prisoner rehabilitation, 78 inmates across Telangana prisons have successfully cleared the SSC examination through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The Telangana Prisons Department has announced special remission for these individuals as recognition of their achievement.

The inmates were part of a group of 108 prisoners enrolled in the Class X programme under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Prisons Department and NIOS. Over the past year, they attended regular classes, mock tests, and pre-board examinations, supported by teachers from both government and private institutions.

Certificates Distributed, Future Education Encouraged

Of the successful candidates, 56 were from the Central Prison in Cherlapalli, 15 from the Central Prison in Nizamabad, and seven from the Special Prison for Women in Hyderabad. Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Soumya Mishra personally distributed certificates to the inmates and announced a "Director General’s Remission" as a reward for their educational accomplishment.

“The department will now encourage the successful candidates to pursue Senior Secondary education through NIOS,” Mishra stated.

Pathways to Higher Education and Vocational Training

The Prisons Department is also laying out further educational and vocational opportunities for these inmates. Those who complete their 10+2 education will have the option to enrol in Bachelor of Arts programmes offered by the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University Study Centre at Cherlapalli prison. Additionally, they can join ITI courses at the industrial training institute established within the same facility.

The success of this initiative has sparked growing interest in education among the prison population. Another 47 inmates have already enrolled in the SSC programme, signalling a positive trend in the department’s efforts to rehabilitate prisoners through education.

This development underscores the potential of education to transform lives, even within the confines of prison walls, and highlights the Telangana Prisons Department’s commitment to providing inmates with opportunities for personal growth and reintegration into society.
