West Bengal to Set Up Digital Content Creator Labs in 500 Schools

In a significant push to equip students with future-ready skills, the West Bengal government has announced the establishment of Digital Content Creator Labs in 500 government schools over the next five years. The initiative aims to train approximately one lakh students annually in disciplines such as animation, gaming, visual effects, storytelling, and other allied fields.

Preparing Students for the Digital Economy

The programme targets students from Classes 9 to 12 and is designed to foster digital creativity, literacy, and storytelling skills. The state’s Education Department has already issued directives to district-level secondary school inspectors, requesting detailed information on existing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and computer lab infrastructure, as well as available human resources, to facilitate the rollout. Schools have been asked to submit this data via a Google Form by July 22.

The labs will focus on the fast-growing Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) sector, aligning with national efforts to develop a skilled workforce for the digital economy. The initiative also ties into the Union Budget 2026–27, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to establish similar labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges across India.

Challenges in Implementation

While the initiative holds promise, officials have expressed concerns about the availability of adequately trained teachers to deliver specialised training in digital content creation. Despite these challenges, the programme is seen as a critical step toward preparing students for careers in the expanding digital media and creative technology industries.

Broader Vision for Employment

According to sources in the Education Department, this effort is part of a larger strategy by both the Centre and the state government to expand employment opportunities in the creative technology sector. By equipping students with cutting-edge skills, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and the demands of the digital economy.
