West Bengal launches toll-free helplines to fight corruption

In a significant move to address corruption in public life, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday launched four toll-free helpline numbers dedicated to tackling issues such as cut money, extortion by syndicates, illegal toll booths, and bootlegging. The initiative, operational from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, aims to empower citizens to report grievances and ensure prompt action.

Dedicated Helplines for Specific Complaints

The helpline numbers—155445 for cut money complaints, 155334 for extortion, 155337 for illegal toll booths, and 155339 for bootlegging—are part of the state government’s broader anti-corruption strategy. Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized that genuine grievances reported through these numbers would be addressed swiftly. However, he also warned that sharing false information would invite legal consequences under applicable laws.

AI and Police Mechanisms to Ensure Accountability

To streamline the process, artificial intelligence will initially categorize complaints, followed by investigations conducted by police officers. State Chief Secretary Manoj Agrawal confirmed that all calls to the helpline would be recorded, with mechanisms in place to retrieve records when necessary. Regular reports detailing the number of complaints and subsequent actions will be submitted to the Chief Minister for review.

Tackling Police Shortages

Highlighting the importance of robust law enforcement, Adhikari also pledged to address the state’s police personnel shortage. Currently, West Bengal has only 106 police personnel per lakh population, far below the target of 200 set by the administration. The Chief Minister assured that the government would work to fill 47,000 vacancies in the police force, bringing the state closer to its goal and improving public safety infrastructure.

Recognition for NEET Achievers

In addition to the anti-corruption measures, Adhikari felicitated students who excelled in the NEET examination, describing their success as a source of pride for the state. He promised upgrades to both public and private medical college infrastructure to support the future doctors of West Bengal. “This success is not theirs alone; the people of West Bengal are overjoyed by your achievements,” he remarked.
