Vizianagaram floods damage 15,000 acres of crops, force 1,500 families to evacuate

Farmers in Vizianagaram district bear the brunt of incessant rain

Officials of the irrigation department released 24,000 cusecs of water from Madduvalasa reservoir in Rajam Assembly constituency on Friday after water levels rose in the Vegavathi and Suvarnamukhi rivers.

Crop damage and evacuations

Vizianagaram district has been the worst-hit, with over 15,000 acres of standing crop damaged in the incessant rains.

The flooding also forced the evacuation of 1,500 families from low-lying areas, according to the source account.

The scale of crop damage has deepened concerns among residents, who complained that they would suffer financial losses because of the damage to crops.

MLA visits affected villages

Rajam Telugu Desam Party MLA Kondru Murali Mohan visited flood-affected villages in Vangara mandal and assured villagers of quick support from the government.

He directed TDP leaders and workers to take up service activities in the flood-affected villages after hearing the residents’ complaints over likely financial losses from crop damage.

The legislator specifically directed TDP leaders and activists to work in flood-affected villages including Koppara, Kondachakarapalli, Geetanapalli, and Patuvardhanam.

Reservoir releases and district impact

Thotapalli reservoir, located near Parvatipuram, has received huge waters from catchment areas.

Around 23,250 cusecs of water from the Nagavali River was discharged from the reservoir on Friday afternoon.

The impact of floods in Parvatipuram-Manyam district has been less compared to Vizianagaram and Srikakulam.

However, the two-day rain proved to be a relief for residents of the district.
