Visa-Free Travel Sparks 16% Increase in South Korean Trips to China

A surge in visa-free travel and the convenience of short flights have made China an increasingly popular weekend getaway for South Koreans, with 1.7 million visiting the country in the first half of this year—a 16% increase compared to the same period last year.

China Tops Short-Haul Destinations

China emerged as the top choice for South Koreans’ short-haul international trips, accounting for 27.4% of outbound journeys between July 18 and August 8, according to Modetour, a leading South Korean travel agency. Short-haul travel made up 82% of all South Korean overseas trips during this period, underscoring the appeal of nearby destinations.

Affordable, Accessible, and Culturally Rich

For many travelers, like 57-year-old Kim Ji-soo from Seoul, China’s proximity and affordability are key draws. Kim recently visited Qingdao, a coastal city in northern China, and praised its vibrant atmosphere, spacious surroundings, and local cuisine. “It seemed affordable, nearby, and I wanted to visit a new city,” she said, adding that the sight of young families contributed to the city’s lively energy.
