Tourism and technology may hold key to boosting China's public image in the US

China could enhance its standing among American audiences by emphasizing sectors such as tourism and technology while projecting itself as a responsible major power, according to a new survey.

Positive perceptions persist despite media narrative

Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou found that despite increasing prominence of concepts like "decoupling" and "de-risking" in media coverage of China, these narratives have not completely erased favorable impressions of the country. The survey also concluded that many people believed China played a positive role on the world stage.

Global influence tops perception rankings

When respondents evaluated China's strengths on a scale of 1 to 5, global influence emerged at the top with a score of 4.38. Achievements in science and technology followed with 3.59, while higher education received a rating of 3.56.

Recommendations for image reinforcement

The survey found many respondents believed China was contributing to global peace, stability and governance. This prompted the researchers to argue that Beijing should reinforce its image as a responsible major power by highlighting its role in United Nations peacekeeping missions, fighting climate change, and providing aid.

The study also emphasized the need to directly address "misunderstandings" and "scepticism" in international media through greater transparency and openness. Additionally, the researchers noted that the American public had "a high level of interest" in issues such as Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tibet.
