The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has arranged a special drainage system at Punnami Ghat ahead of the Saras Aajeevika Mela, which is going to be held from October 13.

The system is intended to ensure the smooth disposal of wastewater and prevent it from stagnating during the event.

Municipal Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M. said the arrangements were being made in view of the large influx of vendors expected to arrive from across the country and set up stalls at the venue.

Underground drainage and cleanliness measures

The VMC Commissioner directed the authorities to provide underground drainage facilities wherever necessary.

He also instructed officials to ensure that cleanliness is maintained throughout the mela.

The focus on drainage and sanitation comes as the venue prepares to receive vendors from different parts of the country, with the civic body seeking to manage wastewater disposal during the event.

President Droupadi Murmu is also expected to attend the mela.

Earlier in the day, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications and Guntur MP Pemmasani Chandrasekhar and Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) inspected the arrangements at Punnami Ghat.

Focus on women-led products

Speaking to the media later, Mr. Sivanath said the event had been held in Guntur last year and was a great success.

He said efforts were being made to organise the Vijayawada event along similar lines.

According to Mr. Sivanath, the primary objective of the mela was to promote products made by women and create opportunities for them to access national markets.

He said this would help strengthen their economic independence.

Mr. Sivanath urged women from self-help groups to participate in large numbers and utilise the opportunity.

He said the mela would provide a valuable marketing platform for handicrafts, traditional products and other household items made by women.

The event is therefore intended not only to bring vendors together at Punnami Ghat but also to support the wider market access of products made by women.

Vijayawada Police Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu, Mr. Dhyanachandra and other district and corporation officials took part in the programme.
