Vietnam's President To Lam Strengthens Ties with Australia and New Zealand

Vietnam’s President To Lam is on a six-day visit to Australia and New Zealand, aiming to deepen ties in trade, defence, and technology. The trip, which concludes on Friday, is expected to result in the signing of multiple agreements, including 12 to 16 with Australia and five to six with New Zealand, according to official statements.

Strengthening Maritime Security and Regional Stability

In Australia, Lam and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the importance of maritime security cooperation, including intelligence-sharing and joint patrols. “We agree that, amid rapid and complex developments around the world, countries need to strengthen dialogue, build trust, ensure security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight,” Lam said during a joint media appearance. Albanese echoed these sentiments, highlighting shared concerns over strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific, with Albanese praising Vietnam’s leadership within ASEAN. The two nations also agreed to enhance collaboration in defence, border security, and other critical sectors such as the digital economy, agriculture, and science.

Trade Expansions and Market Access

Economic cooperation featured prominently during Lam’s discussions in Australia. Notably, Vietnam agreed to provide market access for Australian kangaroo and deer meat, a move expected to generate up to A$500,000 (US$350,000) in trade for Australian exporters.

In New Zealand, Lam’s visit marks the first by a Vietnamese head of state since 2007. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced plans to boost ties across sectors like food and fibre, education, tourism, technology, and aviation. The agreements are anticipated to support more exports and job creation in New Zealand.
