India’s Vice-President highlighted the transformative power of research in his address at the 22nd convocation of the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) in Kattankulathur. He underscored the importance of using research for societal benefit, citing India’s global contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic as a prime example.

India’s humanitarian approach to COVID-19 vaccines

The Vice-President recalled how, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive, India provided COVID-19 vaccines to over 100 countries free of cost, showcasing the nation’s commitment to humanity. He noted that the vaccines saved lives worldwide, emphasizing India’s longstanding ethos of prioritizing peace, development, and humanitarian values. He also shared a recent interaction with the Speaker of the Kenyan Parliament, who expressed gratitude for India’s support during the pandemic.

SRMIST praised for fostering innovation and societal impact

Commending SRMIST’s academic achievements, the Vice-President lauded its efforts to nurture interdisciplinary learning, creativity, entrepreneurship, and critical thinking. He highlighted the institute's focus on translating research into practical solutions that enhance lives, bolster industries, and promote sustainable development. Such initiatives, he noted, align with the broader vision of research serving humanity.

Tamil Nadu Governor calls for pride in India’s scientific heritage

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also addressed the gathering, urging the audience to take pride in India’s rich heritage of science and technology. He emphasized the importance of appreciating ancient achievements alongside modern advancements, fostering a sense of continuity and respect for the nation’s scientific legacy.

Convocation milestones and unveiling of Founder Chancellor’s statue

The convocation marked a significant milestone for SRMIST, with 11,684 graduates from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology eligible for degrees across all campuses. R. Velusamy, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). Additionally, the Vice-President unveiled a 32-foot statue of Founder Chancellor Dr. T.R. Paarivendhar at the Vendhar Museum, symbolizing the institute’s enduring legacy.
