Vellore Police Destroy Over 10,500 kg of Seized Gutkha

In a significant move to curb the smuggling and consumption of banned tobacco products, the Vellore district police destroyed over 10,500 kilograms of seized gutkha on Sunday. The contraband, weighing 10,568 kilograms, was disposed of at an open plot in Thangal village, located on the outskirts of Vellore Corporation, following court approval.

According to the police, the operation was carried out under the directive of Superintendent of Police N.U. Sivaraman, who emphasized the department's ongoing efforts to tackle the illegal trade and use of gutkha in the region. The banned tobacco products were confiscated during various enforcement drives and vehicle checks conducted across police stations in Pallikonda, Vellore Taluk, Virinchipuram, and Anaicut, all falling under the Vellore sub-division.

Authorities ensured that the destruction process adhered strictly to legal and environmental guidelines. The selected site was prepared to safely dispose of the contraband without causing harm to the surrounding area. This action underscores the district police's commitment to enforcing the ban on gutkha, which remains illegal in Tamil Nadu due to its harmful effects on public health.

Gutkha, a chewable tobacco product, has been prohibited in Tamil Nadu since 2013. Despite the ban, its smuggling and sale continue to pose challenges for law enforcement agencies. The latest destruction of seized products is part of a broader crackdown aimed at discouraging the illicit trade and consumption of gutkha in the state.

The Vellore police have vowed to intensify their efforts to prevent the circulation of such substances and protect public health. Sunday's disposal operation serves as a reminder of the authorities' resolve to tackle this issue head-on.
